Integrations
Safeguard your Google Cloud Storage data from exposure and cyber threats.
The Challenge
Google Cloud Storage offers robust and scalable cloud environments for businesses to store and manage data. However, misconfigurations in Identity and Access Management (IAM) controls, weak encryption, and the risk of compromised credentials are growing concerns.
Solution
Concentric AI detects threats like unauthorized access attempts and using stolen credentials, alerting security teams to take real-time action.
Misconfigured Identity and Access Management (IAM)
Misconfigured IAM policies can result in overly broad access, leaving sensitive cloud data vulnerable. Concentric AI helps identify and correct IAM misconfigurations, ensuring that only authorized users can access critical resources.
Weak encryption
Cloud platforms are often exposed to risks when encryption is not consistently applied to data at rest and in transit. Concentric AI ensures encryption protocols are enforced across your cloud environment.
Google Cloud Storage (GCS) is commonly used to store large volumes of business-critical and sensitive information, including customer records, financial data, intellectual property, application data, backups, and analytics datasets. Common security risks include misconfigured IAM policies, overly permissive bucket access, publicly exposed objects, compromised credentials, excessive service-account permissions, and unauthorized data sharing or movement.
The challenge is not simply securing the buckets themselves. Security teams need to understand what sensitive data is stored in GCS, where it resides, who or what can access it, and whether that access is appropriate. Concentric AI continuously discovers and classifies sensitive data across GCS and connects data sensitivity with identity and access context. This helps organizations identify high-risk exposure, reduce unnecessary access, and prioritize remediation based on the data at risk.
Google Cloud Storage relies on Google Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM) to control access to buckets and objects. Misconfigured IAM policies can grant users, groups, service accounts, or other principals broader access than necessary. Risks can include public or unintended access, excessive permissions, inherited access, and permissions that remain in place after they are no longer required.
Traditional IAM reviews show who has permissions, but they don't necessarily reveal the sensitivity of the data those permissions expose. Concentric AI adds that missing data context by identifying sensitive information in GCS and correlating it with users, groups, service accounts, and access permissions. Security teams can then focus remediation on excessive permissions that expose the most sensitive data rather than treating every IAM finding equally.
Integrating Google Cloud Storage with services such as Google Workspace and BigQuery can make data more useful and accessible, but it can also create additional paths through which sensitive information can be accessed, copied, analyzed, or shared. Data may move between GCS buckets and BigQuery datasets for analytics, while users may access or share related information through Google Workspace applications such as Drive.
This interconnected environment can make it difficult to maintain consistent visibility into where sensitive data resides, how it moves, and which identities can access it across services. Concentric AI provides a unified view of sensitive data across cloud and SaaS environments, helping organizations understand data exposure across GCS, Google Workspace, and BigQuery and identify inappropriate access, sharing, or exposure.
Compromised user credentials, service-account keys, or other cloud credentials can allow an attacker to access GCS while appearing to be a legitimate identity. The risk depends heavily on the permissions assigned to the compromised account and the sensitivity of the buckets and objects it can reach. Unusual access patterns, unexpected downloads, access from unfamiliar identities, or activity involving sensitive data can all warrant investigation.
Google Cloud logging and monitoring capabilities can help identify suspicious authentication and storage activity. Concentric AI adds data-level context, connecting access activity to the sensitivity of the information being accessed. This helps security teams determine whether a potentially compromised identity is actually interacting with sensitive data, prioritize investigations, and understand the potential impact of the activity.
The compliance requirements for data stored in Google Cloud Storage depend on the type of data, industry, geographic location, and applicable regulations. Depending on the organization and use case, GCS may contain information subject to GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, CCPA/CPRA, SOC 2, and other privacy and security requirements.
Compliance requires organizations to know where regulated and sensitive information resides, who can access it, and whether appropriate safeguards are being applied. Concentric AI helps provide this data-level visibility by continuously discovering and classifying sensitive information in GCS, analyzing access and exposure, and helping identify potential compliance risks. This enables security and compliance teams to strengthen data governance while reducing unnecessary exposure.
